Less than a fortnight out from Christmas a family is in mourning following a “freak” car accident that took the life of a woman and left a baby boy in hospital.
The woman died at the scene of the crash, in Balliang East near Bacchus Marsh.
Police say the tragedy was the result of a “freak” accident when a metal object on the road flipped up and hit her SUV.
She lost control and ran off the road, hitting a tree just after 2.15pm on Friday afternoon along the Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Rd.
Nothing could be done to save her life and she died at the scene.
Meanwhile, the baby boy was taken by ambulance to the Royal Children’s Hospital with minor injuries.
“It’s very amazing that the baby survived and we are very thankful that it has,” a police spokesperson said.
“Something has flown off the road causing her to veer off the road and then collide into a tree – it’s a very harrowing scene at this point.”
Ironically, the tragedy comes on the same day Victoria Police launched this year’s Christmas road safety blitz.
Victoria’s road toll stands at a four-year high.
At Friday’s launch, there were 253 baubles placed on a Christmas tree to represent the lives lost on Victoria’s roads this year.
But the afternoon tragedy near Bacchus Marsh makes it 254.
